We, as parents of chess club students from Richland Elementary Schools, won a bid on April 13, 2002, to bring the 2003 "Washington State Elementary Chess Championship" tournament to the Tri-Cities on April 12, 2003.  We are requesting your sponsorship to provide financial, material, or labor support.  Some suggestions for financial, material, or labor support are attached.  Please have the letter of intent signed by the person authorized to distribute funds, material, or to volunteer services, and call David M. Merrill, 509 375-0456.

We feel that teaching chess to elementary school students helps them to improve their problem solving abilities.  We feel it also, increases their ability to comprehend spatial relationships, helps them to learn how to "plan ahead", and provides them with skills that improve their ability to learn math and science.  Tournament competition builds self-esteem, and motivates these students to improve their chess skills which we feel helps them improve problem-solving skills.  These skills in turn help them achieve scholastic goals, especially in mathematics, science and engineering disciplines.

Bringing the State tournament to the Tri-Cities will encourage local elementary schools to develop chess clubs, and expand the opportunities for children enrolled in grades K-6 to learn this game.  Many may not master it, but most that join a club will gain at least some analytical thinking skills.  Please see our web page at: http://www.chesschampions.org

Please also notice our sponsor's page.  We would be glad to list your company name and provide a link to your website in return for your commitment to help sponsor this event.  We will maintain this website at least until May 2003.  With your help, we expect the 2003 "Washington State Elementary Chess Championship" tournament will be an exemplary tournament to be remembered!

Sincerely,

David M. Merrill
